Dr Nyaoro was the UDASA Chairperson for two terms from 2006 to 2010.  He also served as UDASA Deputy Secretary from 1991 to 1993. He retired as a Senior Lecturer from the University of Dar es Salaam in June 2014 but was requested to undertake a postretirement contract to continue with the supervision of postgraduate students up to January 2019. He was responsible for teaching Foundation Engineering, Highway Materials and Machine Foundations to both Undergraduate and Postgraduate students and supervised research students in the same area.

Dr Nyaoro holds a BSc (Engineering) from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1981, a DIC and MSc in Soil Mechanics from Imperial College, London in 1983 and later a PhD in Soil Mechanics from Imperial College, London in 1989. 

Dr Nyaoro was a stern advocate of improved staff welfare, better staff remuneration, conducive working condition, and improved allocation of financial resources to academic activities in the University. During his tenure as Deputy Secretary, he served as Team Leader of UDASA Committee that conducted negotiations with the Government on payment of a living wage for academic staff that culminated into the establishment of University Teaching Allowance for Academic Staff which was later integrated into the salary structure under PUTS scheme.  During his leadership as UDASA Chairperson he teamed up with leaders of other academic staff associations (ASAS) and formed a team to negotiate with the Government towards the improvement of retirement benefit (pension scheme) for academic staff.  These efforts lead to the transfer of staff who were under the least favourable SSS pension scheme into the PPF scheme in March 2013 and the improvement of the PPF scheme from July 2014.

During his employment with the University of Dar es Salaam, he served in various boards and committees in including the University Council from 2007 to 2010 and the University Tender Board from 2007 to 2014. At the national level, he served in various boards and committees including Chairperson, TANROADS Board, October 2018 to date; Member of the Board of Directors of Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB), August 2017 to August 2020; Member of the Advisory Board of Government Procurement Services Agency (GPSA), September 2016 to September 2019; Chairperson, Mining Advisory Board, March 2016 to June 2017; Government Negotiation Team for Review and Negotiation of Lease and Service Contract Agreements at Julius Nyerere International Airport, October 2017 to July 2018; Harmonisation of Scheme of Service for Academic Staff in Public Universities and University Colleges in Tanzania, 2013 to 2015; Panel of Experts (PoE) for Implementation of Water Dams by the Ministry of Water in Tanzania 2012 to Date; and Tanzania representative in a 10 person committee for vetting applications of hosting the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), 2008 to 2009.

He held several administrative positions in the University including Head, Finance Department; College of Engineering and Technology, 2001 to 2009; Head, Soil Mechanics Laboratory, Transportation and Geotechnical Engineering Department, 2001 – 2007.  At the University, Dr Nyaoro was entrusted to serve as convenor of various technical teams including Academic Workload Optimization and Compensation for Extra Workload, 2017/2018; Review of shortcomings in the Scheme of Service for Administrative and Technical Staff, April to May 2016; Review of full-time equivalent factors for academic programmes, 2007; Analysis of long outstanding University of Dar es Salaam debtors for writing-off, 2007; Evaluation of the state of sanitary facilities around teaching areas in the University of Dar es Salaam, 2007; and Enquiry committee on allegations against USAB, 2006.

He also participated as a member of technical teams instituted to address various issues at the University of Dar es Salaam and national levels.  These include UDASA Team for the Enquiry on the Conflicts at the Institute of Resource Assessment and Centre for Climate Change at the University of Dar es Salaam, 2018; Development of unit costs for implementation of water projects by the Ministry of Water in Tanzania, September 2015 to October 2017, and a Study on Feasibility of Affiliating Ardhi Institute (ARI) to the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), 1993.
