Prof Kitila Mkumbo was the UDASA Chairperson during the 2014 - 2016 leadership term. His chairmanship was shortened to one year because he went on sabbatical leave in 2015, hence handed over the leadership responsibilities to Dr Vincent Anney in December 2015.
Prof Mkumbo is currently a Member of Parliament for Ubungo Constituency since November 2020 and a Minister of Industrial and Trade. Before his current portfolio, he was the State Minister in the President's office responsible for Investment since December 2020. Before running for a parliamentary seat, he was the Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Water and Irrigation from March 2016 to June 2020.
Prior to his appointment as PS, Prof Mkumbo was a Professor of Educational Psychology in the UDSM School of Education. His researches focus on Sexuality and HIV/AIDS education, Health education, Adolescent health behaviours, Inclusive education, Interpersonal and intergroup relationships, Psychosocial factors associated with teaching and learning, and Survey research. He researched and published extensively on those areas, taught several courses in psychology, and supervised postgraduate students.
