Prof. Mahugija is an Associate Professor of Analytical and Environmental Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). Currently, he is the Chairperson of University of Dar es Salaam Academic Staff Assembly (UDASA). He holds a PhD in Chemistry obtained in 2007–2011 from the UDSM & German Research Centre for Environmental Health, Munich-Germany. He also holds an MSc in Chemistry obtained in 2001–2004 from UDSM & Munich-Germany, and BSc (Ed) from the UDSM in 1997–2001.
Prof. Mahugija has extensive work experience from the UUDSM and other various national and international institutions/organizations. He teaches various undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Project Work, and Fuel Chemistry and Technology. He also works on development and applications of analytical methods for organic and inorganic compounds and study the environmental chemodynamics and effects of xenobiotic compounds. His research interests include analyses of organic and inorganic chemicals in environmental samples, food, industrial products, human beings and others. He has been a board member, coordinator, internal and external examiner to many institutions in and outside the country at different times.
Prof. Mahugija has many professional affiliations such founder member of ANCAP 2002 to date; Member, Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association (WIOMSA) 2005 to date; Member, Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) 2006 to date; Member, World Academy of Young Scientists (WAYS) 2007 to 2017; Member, Tanzania Chemical Society (TCS) 2017 to date, and Reviewer of International Journals. Currently, Prof. Mahugija is a Chief Editor, Tanzania Journal of Science.
Prof. Mahugija is a winner of many prizes/awards including University Prize, Thermodynamics Prize, Chemistry Prize, Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) Prize, Double Cola Cash Prize, Coca Cola Kwanza Prize, Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education Prize, First winner award for the best outreach project of the year, UDSM 2021/2022, best winner in publications in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS) in 2018/2019, and winner in the best public service delivery/consultancy in CoNAS in 2018/2019.
